The camera function allows for cropping, shape, reduce red-eye, etc. before emailing the picture out. My phone and another camera weren’t able to take the quality of photos required for our ID cards. The iPhone 4S did. How would you rate Verizon’s network? They have service almost everywhere! What would you tell other people considering buying an iPhone? The IPhone 4S is more than just a cell phone. GPS, Internet, games, camera, alarm clock, restaurant guide.

Considering the cost of each of those gadgets separately the IPhone 4S is a great value. The Siri feature is great for anyone that struggles with the smaller buttons or keypad (the key pad on the phone feature is larger than the typing keypad), or someone that must keep their eyes on the road. One day a client was in my office and made mention of the difficulties with his cell phone, able to read the icons, etc. He played with the iPhone I had and saw the value of it and planned to take his wife shopping for one the next day.

Are you going to buy an iPhone? After trying out the iPhone, I see what I’m missing. But I want a real keyboard. While my current smartphone has served me well, I see there are much better options out there.

But when she returned home she received a bill for more than 8,000.”It’s for one day of service,” she said. “It seems like an error. I can see if had been using my Internet regularly, everyday while I was in Paris, checking my Facebook or something, but that’s not what it was.”She said she only made a few phone calls and barely got on the Internet.Back in the United States, Walker said she continued contacting Verizon.”He said ultimately we’ll credit 35 percent of the bill, which is over fifty-two hundred dollars still owing,” she said. “I said I can’t accept that.”Scott Charlston, a Verizon public relations representative for the Pacific Northwest region, told KATU News by phone, “Our goal is to notify customers of excessive data usage immediately.

When it is apparent that we did not issue a proper alert, we will credit the customer’s account.”Charlston said customers should get an alert once they go just a few hundred dollars over their usage amounts.After KATU starting looking into the excessive charges on Walker’s account, she said Verizon contacted her and is crediting her most of the 8,000. The Federal Communications Commission and major wireless companies this week announced a joint effort to alert cell phone users whenever theyre about to go over their monthly subscriber minute or data plans. According to the new voluntary plan aka Wireless Consumer Usage Notification Guidelines the major carriers, from AT&T to Verizon , will begin sending text-message warnings to customers to cover four areas voice, text, data and international roaming. The alerts will require no effort to join, as subscribers will be automatically enrolled, though they can always opt out. Thats the good news. The bad news Dont expect these alerts quite yet, as carriers have a year and a half to comply fully. Participating companies which include AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Nextel and T-Mobile USA will provide customers with at least two out of the four notifications by October 17, 2012, and all of the alerts by April 17, 2013. 1 in 6 Report Bill Shock The move follows asurvey by the Consumers Union that found one in six of cell phone users has experienced so-called bill shock, which stems mainly from unexpected overage or roaming charges.

The same study found that two-thirds of bill shock complaints received by the FCC during the first six months of 2010 had charges of 100 or more and 20% were for 1,000 or more. In some extreme cases, customers have been charged hundreds of thousands of dollars for exceeding their plans allowances. While the guidelines announced Monday are voluntary, a majority of cell phone customers should benefit from the alerts. The wireless industrys Code of Conduct will be revised to reflect these basic obligations and toensure that consumers receive the alerts and notifications they need and the FCC has been callingfor, said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski in prepared remarks Monday. The carriers have committed to moving as expeditiously as possible to change their systems. Existing Alerts In practice, the new guidelines are meant to level the playing field and create an industry-wide standard; some carriers already provide some of the alerts.

According to the announcement, itll be retaining the addresses of websites that users visit while on Verizons wireless network. (This can also include search terms customers have used.) Itll also keep a record of phone locations and information about app and phone feature usage. Finally, itll track information about what kind of devices people are using and how much they’re using them. All that information can be shared with advertisers and other outside companies, unless users choose to opt out.

Its worth pointing out that while the data Verizon plans to share wont be personally identifiable, it is aggregated with demographic and interest categories things such as gender and age range, as well as broad identifiers such as frequent diner or pet owner. Verizon spokesman Jeffrey Nelson says this data will provide businesses with insights about their customers to help provide content that is more appealing to users, or to help advertisers better select the ads they will display on outdoor billboards or at other venues, according to the International Business Times. One final note While this privacy change is certainly newsworthy, Verizon isnt the only telecom that collects and stores this kind of information. And theres one last caveat, and heres how Amazon mightve gotten a break from Verizon All activations associated with such phones must be brand-new, with a new line of service.

Hesse is a surprisingly good speaker. Sprint’s CEO is articulate, clear and he presented without prompts. No slides! Now there’s the measure of someone who can command the stage. “Perfect Storm of Innovation” Ralph de la Vega, CEO AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, followed Hesse. His style was more antimated than was Sprint’s CEO. He started by talking about the “mobile revolution”, which he described as “the perfect storm of innovation”. The AT&T executive focused on the new era of collaboration, calling out Boeing as an example for inviting customers/partners to participate in the design of the Dreamliner.

Collaboration is a priority for AT&T particularly working with mobile software developers. “We can’t wait for innovation to come to us, we have to go to where the innovation is”. So the company founded AT&T Foundry, with locations in Palo Alto, Calif., Plano, Texas and Israel. AT&T has created its own API toolkit and supports HTML5. The Foundry also provides access to back-end services. It’s a platform pitch you don’t often hear from wireless carriers.

There’s more. “We’re using a venture capital model” to allow ideas generated anywhere within the company to quickly get attention. The ideas with the most potential receive immediate funding. AT&T calls the collaboration program TIP — The Innovation Platform.

More than 100,000 employees participate. Yesterday, AT&T released an app for dividing work and personal zones on its handsets. The idea, de la Vega explained, is to help CIOs demarcate employees’ personal stuff, like music, from corporate applications and content. The app came out of the TIP program, from an employee suggestion. “Connected devices are the next big thing in mobility”, de la Vega said, and he wasn’t talking cell phones — everything from e-readers to GPS pet tags and more.

He went on to discuss connected “wearable devices”, such as the fireman’s suit that reports his vital signs. Ralph de la Vega’s content contrasted sharply from Dan Hesse’. Sprint’s CEO spoke about wireless’ broader benefits and put them in context of helping people everywhere. The AT&T chief executive mostly spoke about what his company is doing and the benefits to business. Machine-to-Machine Wireless Dan Mead, Verizon Wireless CEO, wrapped up the keynote, and he commanded the stage, too. I’ve reported on tech for 17 years, and I’ve rarely seen three so articulate major executives speaking one after the other. Mead spoke about the importance of collaboration. He asserted that the wireless carriers have long worked together, even while competing, which has allowed the industry to rapidly grow. He used roaming agreements as one example how carriers cooperate while competing. “Cooperation and collaboration are booming today at Verizon Wireless”, he boasted. Mead emphasized the importance of “machine-to-machine” wireless communications. Examples include cameras that snap photos if a car is hit while the driver is away. Mead spoke about the speed of wireless innovation, but “we are just at the beginning”, he claimed. Four years ago the average lifecycle of a cell phone was 24 months, but it is much less today. That’s a measure of the speed of innovation, he said. Verizon Wireless’ CEO wrapped up by emphasizing the importance of collaboration — and with it responsibility — as assuring the industry can proceed without “government intervention”. I think that you can use Twitter of Facebook or e-mail or text to be able to get food ordered, and there should be some kind of fee to have someone deliver it right to your seat. People want convenience, and theyll pay for that. But I agree, it hurts when people are standing in line and the game has re-started, so were doing everything we can to try to move the lines. Also on the concessions docket? More mayo. I hear what the fans are complaining about, Leonsis said. Two years ago I made news by saying that I was gonna walk around and make sure that the ketchup dispensers were filled, and everyone laughed, but that was an issue. And this weekend one of the number one complaints was mayonnaise, and it was passionate, that there were stands that didnt have mayonnaise. Anyone who sent the owner of the Capitals an e-mail about mayo seriously needs to think about his or her life priorities, by the way. Mustard? I mean, maybe. Not mayo, though.

Other issues. Verizon Center Wireless It has been a big issue. Over the weekend I got a couple of friendly e-mails saying hey thank you, I was able to get online, but its our biggest issue. No matter how much capacity we bring in, it gets used, as people go from reading their e-mail to posting photos to wanting to watch CSN and the game itself on their iPads. And we didnt initially design the arena to be a multimedia theater, but thats what the fans want, and were doing our best to accommodate them. Buying the Redskins Dans a friend and Dan owns the team.

If someone was asking Dan Snyder whether he wanted to buy the Caps or Wizards, I would be hurt and offended, so I dont think its a question that deserves to be addressed. Ive got my hands full with the teams that I own, and I wish I could do a better job for our fans and make our teams winners. And my focus right now is on one thing trying to keep our fans really really happy and to win a championship for one of our three teams. And right now the Caps are in-season, and thats the singular focus of every person associated with the organization. Bringing back the Freedom Again, Im so busy, and not successful yet.

And so Im really flattered when people say you should take on this, you should take on that, but I dont feel we have the bandwidth nor the skills yet to be deserving of running and managing more things.

You are still able to order the iPhone online, but it’s now estimated to take at least one to two weeks for delivery.

Refurbished Verizon Cell Phones – It has been a couple of years since I owned an iPhone and earlier this week I participated with Jason Perlow in the Great Debate about the new iPhone 4S. I wasnt necessarily overwhelmed by the iPhone 4S and wasnt sure if I was going to buy one, but I am almost certain to order one after reading of Steve Jobs passing as a personal tribute to his legacy. One factor in my purchase decision is the non-subsidized price because I have only been a Verizon customer for about 8 months. Larry wrote a post about the subsidized pricing model, but without this upgrade eligibility be prepared for a shock. We always compare subsidized pricing in reviews since that is the way people buy their phones in the U.S. However, I usually buy my phones overseas or so often that I rarely get the subsidized price. The new iPhone 4S comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities priced at subsidized prices of 199, 299, and 399, respectively.

If you are like me and not yet eligible for the full price subsidy then the prices are 649, 749, and 849, respectively. Yes, the subsidy takes care of 450 of the full price. Due to this huge 450 cost difference, I realize I could pay the 325 ETF and still come out 125 ahead of the game with another carrier. Thus I started to consider the Sprint iPhone 4S with unlimited data or the AT&T iPhone 4S with faster data speeds. The thing is I like Verizon because I am grandfathered into their unlimited data plan and I get better coverage with them than with Sprint or AT&T. However, for the same price I pay Verizon I could also get unlimited text messaging and unlimited calls to other mobile phones. Thus, before Friday morning (thats when online pre-orders start) I need to decide if I am going back with Sprint or sticking with Verizon at a premium price. Will you be buying a non-subsidized iPhone 4S or is this price just too high for you?

Refurbished Verizon Cell Phones – Back when telephones were devices that sat on the hallway table or hung on the kitchen wall, people who called you knew where you were; a phone number named a physical location. The phone company knew that the call had been answered, but it had no idea who took the call. That is no longer the case. With the ubiquitous use of cellphones, people calling you have no idea where you are. Instead it is the the phone companies that know who is answering and where it is you are. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile know all about where you’ve been, where you’re going, where you’re likely to go — and perhaps even who’s going with you. There are lots of reasons for the phone companies to have that information. Knowing where you are is necessary for getting calls through, while knowing where you’re going helps cellular providers provide service. For example, if you’re traveling on an Acela, the provider can reserve towers in advance, which prevents your call from being dropped.

Knowing who’s going with you is a side effect of tracking that person’s travels alongside yours. But such transactional information is highly revealing of private information. What do the cellular carriers do with the data? Do you know? A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by ACLU of North Carolina has revealed a Department of Justice memo showing that Verizon keeps tracking data for “a rolling year,” T-Mobile officially for 4-6 months, but “really a year or more,” AT&T/Cingular since July 2008, Sprint for 18-24 months. That’s not all. While T-Mobile, AT&T/Cingular, and Sprint do not retain the content of your text messages, Verizon does — for 3-5 days. That’s interesting, very interesting.

After all, the content of text messages is content, not transactional data. Verizon is not the only provider to keep such content; Virgin Mobile stores text messages for ninety days. Logging onto to the Web while on your smart phone? Verizon stores your IP session information — where you were browsing and for how long — for ninety days, Sprint and Nextel for sixty. Law enforcement finds this data immensely useful. The French police have long used the tracking data from cell phones — both on and off — to trace who is using stolen credit cards. U.S.

law enforcement has used such information to solve murder cases, bank robberies, and drop the length of time it takes to catch fugitives from forty-two days to two. Law enforcement has also put the data to other uses, including tracking citizens engaged in political protest. Location information is powerful information and it’s no wonder that law enforcement would find the data from the cell phone providers so useful. A single order for transactional communications records can provide the same information as a surveillance team of five working for a month. That’s part of the reason that requests for such transactional information have shot up to over twenty thousand “hybrid” orders annually per carrier (a hybrid order combines past and future location information in a single court request).

That large number should give pause. Currently such data is available as long as the information being sought is likely to be part of an “ongoing criminal investigation.” That is a fairly minimal requirement, but even such minimal requirements are not always followed. Verizon, for example, maintains a list of all text messages have changed last year, according to the document. However, T-Mobile stores the same data from up to five years.
